Albania rallies to cause of banned Gumball
Albania, a country not known for flamboyant displays of wealth, has opened its borders – and Presidential Palace – to the Gumball Rally, a group of Western millionaires driving hugely expensive cars, that has banned from Germany and Turkey.

Since its inception seven years ago the Rally, a seven-day dash for the rich, famous and plain silly, has shot across several continents without diplomatic incident. Until now.

Bush to make historic visit to Albania
TIRANA -- The White House confirmed last week that President George W. Bush will visit Albania on June 10th.

He also plans to visit the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy and Bulgaria, after attending the Group of Eight (G8) summit in Germany from June 6th to the 8th.

Bush plans to meet with Albanian President Alfred Moisiu and Prime Minister Sali Berisha.

NOT long ago, to suggest Albania as a destination of any kind, even a frugal one, would have been the height of chutzpah.

Within five years of Albania's abandoning Communism in 1992, a Ponzi scheme destroyed the nascent market economy and widespread rioting turned Albania into a byword for rampant lawlessness. It was not, except for aid workers and smugglers, on anyone's map.
